Digital payments in Egypt: Design for settlement

Use CBE and NTRA data to plan digital payments, measure checkout completion and reconcile settlements.

A payment path from checkout to settlement

Digital payments in Egypt reach a broad population. The Central Bank of Egypt reported that 54.7 million people aged 15 and above held active transaction accounts at end-2025, or 77.6% of that age group. The measure includes bank and Egypt Post accounts, mobile wallets and prepaid cards. It is a measure of access, not the proportion of retail orders paid digitally. [M06]

What digital payments in Egypt mean for checkout

The NTRA reported 46.3 million telecom mobile wallet accounts and 717.7 million financial transactions in Q2 2025. One person can hold more than one account, and transaction totals cover more than checkout. Use the report to understand channel activity, then use your own customer data to select the payment methods for a pilot. [M07]

Follow the money after the customer pays

Track payment attempt, authorization, order confirmation, refund and settlement separately. Use a server-confirmed provider event to update order status. Give each attempt a stable identifier and test repeated or delayed events. Finance should be able to match the provider settlement report to the order ledger in EGP, including fees and partial refunds.

Anonymized scenario: checkout with two payment paths

A hypothetical Egyptian merchant offers a hosted digital checkout and cash on delivery. It compares completed orders, refused deliveries, refund turnaround and settlement exceptions by method. A method with more checkout attempts may still contribute less if the orders fail at fulfilment.

FAQ

Is a transfer screenshot proof of payment?

Treat it as a request to verify. Confirm the funds through the approved provider or accounting process before changing fulfilment status.

Which method should a pilot add first?

Use actual customer requests, provider availability and finance’s ability to reconcile transactions.
